A recurrent problem

Biofilm are recognized to be a critical and hard to remove
source of contamination because they are extremely
resistant to cleaning and sanitation procedures.
Classical cleaning methods are not satisfying :
- Dangerous products for users
- Little effectiveness: high risk of recontaminating installations and
productions
- Deterioration of the material
- Negative impact on the environment
A biofilm is a protective matrix produced by, and containing, bacteria which stick to surfaces and represent a constant source of contamination in the agri-food industry.
This biofilm is created by the accumulation of bacteria which will develop a protective cocoon made up of organic polymers (EPS): polysaccharides and proteins.

Biofilms are highly resistant to traditional cleaning and disinfection protocols. Once they reach maturity, they will release into the system, contaminating the whole facility.
The biofilm develops over various surfaces: exchangers, tanks, cooling systems, food pipes, membrane filters, etc.
Currently, in the industrial sector, biofilm represents a real problem. In fact, the traditional methods do not allow it to be removed effectively (chemical shocks with sodium, acid, chlorine, etc.).
In some cases, biofilms are responsible for serious contaminations of finished products, entailing significant consequences which could end up with the closure of problematic production lines.
This technology comes from a collaboration of two years with two scientific partners, UCL (Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium) and INRA (National Institute of the Agronomic Research, France).
Realco has developed the BIOREM product line for preventive and curative treatments of biofilms.
The enzyme-based product will act directly on the biofilm's structure. Once the protective matrix is destroyed, the bacteria are left without any protection.
The biofilm is completely pulled away from the surface and finds itself in the solution. It will be removed from the facility with the cleaning solution. The micro-organisms, now unprotected, will be killed during the disinfection stage.
