Biomethanisation Biomethanisation
Biomethanation or anaerobic digestion consists of the degradation, in the absence of oxygen, of miscellaneous organic matter leading, inter alia, to the production of methane (CH4): this is recovered in the form of heat and/or electricity.
This biochemical degradation is carried out by different bacterial consortia performing a different stage over the whole of the process. The first stage is hydrolysis. This is carried out by the extracellular enzymes produced by bacteria. This stage is characterised by breaking the macromolecules into smaller compounds which are more easily digestible by the other bacteria populations.
REALCO has shown that this stage of enzyme production was the limiting stage of the whole organic matter transformation process.
The supplementary addition of enzymes, moreover, specific to the substrate, allows the kinetics of the whole chain of reactions to be considerably accelerated. The advantages associated with the incorporation of an enzymatic hydrolysis into the anaerobic digester are multiple:
- Reduction of the residence time and/or increase of the load accepted by the digester;
- Improvement of the CODin/CODout output: useful for saturated digesters;
- Increase in the biogas produced (15 to 35% depending on the substrates);
- Liquefaction (increase in CODs) of certain clogging substrates, which allows plugging problems to be avoided.
The BIOMETHAZYM product range has already shown its effectiveness on different substrates: manure, slurry, energy crops, sewage sludge, greasy residue, vegetable pulp, etc.
In order to prove the effectiveness of its technologies, REALCO always surrounds itself with professionals from the sector. As an example, REALCO has in particular joined forces with the company NASKEO Environnement to quantify the added value associated with the use of an enzyme-based solution on a specific substrate (apple draff).
NASKEO Environnement is a French spin-off company which offers the small and medium-sized agri-food and pharmaceutical companies ecological stations allowing their organic pollution to be transformed into renewable by the anaerobic digestion process.
During the next 4 months, the Belgian Princess Elisabeth polar station, run by Alain Hubert, will use enzymatic products from REALCO!
